Laython Biddle finds his home at Bartram Trail, top of the state rushing list

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Laython Biddle came to Florida not knowing quite what to expect.

By the time Biddle put a bow on his high school athletics career at Bartram Trail, he was a 2,100-yard rusher, the area’s first state rushing champion since Yulee icon Derrick Henry in 2012 and the All-News4JAX offensive player of the year.

“A lot of things go through my mind,” Biddle said of the accolade. “Definitely, like that’s great company to be in, especially being the only other one [since]. Like, me and Derrick Henry. …”

When Biddle’s family moved from Kansas to St. Johns before the start of his sophomore year, the changes were significant. Sports were different. Everything was faster. Players were better. That’s no slight to Kansas, but Florida athletes and the speed of the game weren’t comparable to what Biddle experienced his first year in high school. His father, Tyson, is in the Navy, and constant moves were a thing Biddle and his siblings were accustomed to. But a move early on in the critical high school developmental years wasn’t like a normal relocation.

It was a challenge unlike any other for Biddle.

“It’s completely different as far as the skill, the speed, the size, everyone’s bigger. Florida is probably one of the best states to play in,” Biddle said. “And you can definitely tell that, especially playing in a different state and then coming here,” he said. “These kids are better. These kids are faster. But it makes you a better player, too. And I think your development really takes off when you get to a state like this.”

It wasn’t just that Biddle put up major numbers (2,198 rushing yards, 26 TDs), it was the level at which he did it. Bartram faced the state’s second-most difficult schedule, according to MaxPreps, a slate that included six playoff teams in the regular season, and three teams (Mainland, Mandarin, St. Augustine) that played for championships.

That schedule was more difficult than ones played by perennial powers Miami Central and Chaminade-Madonna and Aquinas.

More difficult than every state champ.

Only unbeaten national power IMG Academy, who Biddle and the Bears faced in Week 7, faced a more imposing schedule. Biddle rushed for 172 yards and a pair of touchdowns against the Ascenders in a game that Bartram put up 20 points in. IMG allowed just 79 points total in its other nine games.

Notable area rushing totals the last 15 years

Rushing total Player, school Year
4,261 Derrick Henry, Yulee 2012
2,909 Bilal Ally, Clay 2015
2,788 Derrick Henry, Yulee 2010
2,610 Derrick Henry, Yulee, 2011
2,519 Jamauri Wakefield, Providence 2014
2,465 Derrick Henry, Yulee 2009
2,325 Marcus Crowley, Trinity Christian 2018
2,198 Laython Biddle, Bartram Trail 2023
2,178 Jamari Smith, Fletcher 2011
2,124 Myles Montgomery, Fletcher 2019
2,063 Orel Gray, UC 2022
2,061 Logan Wright, Sandalwood 2016
2,017 Keshawn King, Oakleaf 2017

That’s a result Biddle probably couldn’t have envisioned when he was leaving Kansas. There, Biddle was playing three sports at Lawrence Free State High School — baseball, football and wrestling — and thriving. Biddle was a wrestling region runner-up in his freshman year at 160 pounds, suffering his first loss of the season in that meet.

When he arrived in Florida, Biddle knew that he couldn’t maintain that three-sport, year-round schedule if he wanted excel in football. To be the best version of himself and refine the skills that would carry him to program record rushing status by the time he finished, Biddle had to lighten his load.

“Just one [sport]. Had to focus on it because they were so good [in football[],” Biddle said.

It didn’t take long for Biddle’s introduction to Sunshine State sports. He had two games as a sophomore where he surpassed 100 yards rushing, Mandarin and Buchholz. He clicked immediately with the Bears, becoming an excellent option behind Duke-bound back Eric Weatherly.

As a junior, that focus on football paid off as Biddle moved into the featured back role. He rushed for 1,515 yards and 29 touchdowns as the Bears went 12-1 and reached the regional finals. Bartram coach Cory Johns took over for longtime coach Darrell Sutherland last season and said that Biddle’s year was remarkable.

“To do what Laython did against the people that we played this year has been overlooked a little bit, to be honest. To do the things Laython did against the teams he did is unreal. I don’t think it’s gotten enough credit. A lot of the small things that Laython did get overlooked just because the sheer volume of the numbers,” Johns said.

“In protection as well, pass protection, which he was a vital part of, or overall, just being a great teammate. He never cared if he actually got the ball a lot. I really can’t say enough about him.”
